Feed for laying hens

Feed for laying hens must ensure the vitamin requirements of the hens, regardless of the environment in which they are raised (houses, on the ground or outdoors). No matter how much we consider them natural, grass and grain are not enough for laying hens to produce as many eggs as possible.

FEED FOR LAYING HENS – TYPES OF FEED

Feed for laying hens must be chosen very carefully to provide the hens with food rich in vitamins and nutrients. Farmers need to be careful when setting the menu for laying hens. That’s where the experts come to their aid.

FEED FOR LAYING HENS – CARE TIPS FOR LAYING HENS

Feed for laying hens is not enough for the birds to have optimal development. They need several factors to lay as many eggs as possible. The most favorable growing environment for them is in the yard, where they have plenty of suns, room to move and grass. Apart from consistent feed and a conducive environment, laying hens need a minimum of 14-16 hours of light per day and plenty of water. A laying hen raised in such an environment and under such conditions is considered healthy and produces many good-quality eggs with dark yolks.

FEED FOR LAYING HENS – BREEDS OF LAYING HENS

Feeds for laying hens are recommended for all breeds of hens, the most well-known of which are:

  • Australorp race. It is a breed originating from Australia and is known for giving a record number of eggs per year: about 364. They are hens that generally do not require special care and are very adaptable.
  • Lohmann breed. It is a type of egg-laying hen originating in Germany. It lays a large number of eggs per year, namely 320. Like the Australorp breed, it is an adaptable and easy-to-raise hen.
  • Araucana race. It is a more special type of laying hen because its eggs have an attractive characteristic: they are blue. They are laying hens and produce about 200 eggs a year.
  • Leghorn breed. This type of laying hen lays about 200 eggs a year. It comes from the Livorno region, Italy. It is a favorite breed of many breeders because it does not require special care and is a docile breed.

FEED FOR LAYING HENS – METHODS OF RAISING LAYING HENS

Feeds for laying hens can be used for any method of raising laying hens. There are several ways to grow them: on the ground or in batteries.

Soil growing system

The growing spaces are set up in the open air, being covered with vegetation. This method represents the ecological breeding option since its main advantage is that the laying hens benefit from being in the open air. It has been observed that hens raised in such conditions give a more significant number of eggs compared to the number of days in a year.

Growing system in batteries

It represents the ‘mass’ breeding method of chickens. Their comfort is not as great, and this growth method must be carried out respecting some strict European norms. Each battery must have at least 600 cm of the usable surface, with a minimum height of 20 cm. The elements that should be included in a battery are the nest, a watering system, devices for shortening the claws, a bedding layer, and numerous perches.
